Working on Upstairs

Welcome back everyone. We’re steadily progressing through our home building journey, with a bunch getting done while I was busy with work. In this latest installment, we’re pleased to share the developments in various areas of our home.

Daughter’s Room
Daughter’s Room

First we painted and floored our daughter’s room. As previously mentioned we let her pick the colours (bright orange for the walls, light blue for the ceiling, and the dark laminate for the floor.) and honestly when she first did I thought I was going to hate it. Good news, I don’t. The orange isn’t a colour I would chose and this will be only room where it appears, but I don’t hate it. In fact I think the room really suits her. It definately reflects her personality and style.

Upstairs we finished drywalling the ceiling to prepare it for the pine tounge and grove that will go over it. I don’t remember if I mentioned previously that we have to have the drywall for fire seperation from the spray foam which is why it’s there at all. At least we don’t have to sand the mud as much as we do for the walls and ceilings we plan to paint. The plan is to finish the upstairs (so I can move my office into the proper location giving me more room) before heading down.

We also prepared the two spare rooms for painting, which we hope to get done in this coming week, but muding and sanding has proven to be very time consuming with a lot of waiting in between. We have purchased a paint sprayer to save some time and ease the burden on our arms as the whole house will be one colour for now, but having tested it on the daughter’s room we’ve learned that the cleanup from the sprayer is a little more intense than with rollers, both the machine and the person using it. I don’t think it is a tool I would recommend for a finished house unless you are prepared to cover up and/or move out absolutely everything. It does work well for this situation though.

Although our focus has been on upstairs, some things have happened downstairs as well. Most notably, our countertop for the pantry area came in, giving the room a more finished look (though it does still need the floor) and making it easier to make coffee and tea thoughout the workday. It was a bit of a challenge to install in the fairly tight (especially for this house) area, but we got it done and it’s been functioning nicely.

In the laundry room we installed the washer, dryer, and laundry sink, allowing us to do laundry on site again instead of carting it all away to be washed. This has been such an improvement to daily life. That, and the fencing of an area outside the laundry room door for the dog to be while we’re working on the house.

Outside we decided to seed the septic area with grass as the weather had been nice for a while, only for us to worry that it had all died after a few freezing nights. Our worry was for naught though, as the grass has started to grow in the area. This has us excited as it’s one of the requirements to get the occupancy permit. We will probably still need to seed again, but it’s nice to see grass, as this is currently the only area outside with grass at all.

So, that’s what’s been happening in the last couple of months. Now that the really busy season for work is finished we can have two sets of hands helping more and get things moving along again, without ignoring the work to make money that needs to be done. Stay tuned for more progess, and thank you again for sharing this exciting journey with us.
