And some walls too!

The week consisted of gutting the inside of the upper floor, taking off the paneling, getting out the insulation, taking down the walls, etc. Most of the debris ended up in the bin, but we sorted out the reusable wood to make another temporary structure for living comfort while the building is happening and the neighbour took most of the insulation that came out of the walls.

But then the weekend came, and we were busy! Between Friday and Saturday, we got the roof off, including the trusses, for over half the building. Getting the trusses down was a lot of fun involving a pulley system made of rope and our large scaffolding. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture of that setup, but I can’t imagine getting them down just the two of us otherwise. With it though, it was a fairly easy endeavor. (Says the one that didn’t have to lift them at all)

But wait, there’s still more! On Sunday we got the walls down as well from the second floor. (Well, the ones no longer holding up a roof anyway). For the most part, they came down in whole sheets, meaning we had to break them apart on the ground so we could keep the wood that was salvageable (to be used in places other than the new house) and carry the rest to the bin. That bin was looking pretty full by the time we called it a day on Sunday.

There are more pictures of this on our Facebook page this week. Doing it this way is not as much fun as driving into it with the tractor, but it’s a lot cleaner dealing with the debris as we go instead of trying to sort through it and get it all cleaned up. We are currently a little behind schedule as we were hoping to get the excavation done this month with the foundation in July, but we should still be able to get back on track.
At a minimum, have the outside of the new house finished before the snow flies again.
That’s it for this week. Stay tuned for more demolition as we take down the rest of the second floor and get started on the first. Thank you so much for following along on our journey and please follow us on Facebook. See you next week!
