Let There Be Light

If we had known tearing down the covered porch would’ve made this much difference we would’ve done it a lot sooner.

Before – When we first purchased the house in 2018

When we first bought the house it had the deck that came down ages ago, almost right away I believe since it was rotting, and it had the covered porch area by the sliding door in what is currently our living room. There was also a lot more house, as you can see, but there is another blog about its destruction. The covered porch wasn’t exactly built well either, but we’ve left it alone until now thinking there wasn’t much point in removing it until we began tearing the house down.

Same view after – Right now

Tearing down that covered porch has put so much light into our dark, drab living room that for the first time ever we didn’t need the lights on. Before, no matter how bright and sunny it was outside that space was dark. Now it was quite bright, even on the cloudy, rainy weekend we just had. We were amazed at the difference it made, though it’s not enough to stop us from tearing down the house too.

The rest of the deck will be coming down, probably this coming week, and we’ll have to decide if we simply don’t use the sliding door or if we put something to use as stairs there. I imagine we’ll do the latter as otherwise, we’ll have to walk around the house. (Not that it’s that big.)

This time we’re taking the time to take things apart in pieces and deal with the debris as we go. Not nearly as much fun as destroying it with the tractor, but it’s a lot cleaner. The pieces of the covered porch have already been put in the large garbage bin or put by the fire pit for burning. It still seems that tear down and cleanup combined the two ways are about the same for time. (Seriously, it took us forever to clean up the house after the tractor tore it down.)

Inside looking out

Other things that happened this week. We finished digging the trench for the hydro and have been waiting most of the week for the hydro wire to show up so we can move the hydro from the house to the garage. That’s what currently holding us up the most. We also should be submitting the drawings to the municipality tomorrow.

That’s it for this week. Thank you so much for following along on our journey and please follow us on Facebook. See you next week!
