Scaling Back to Save Money

To build the house, one of us is leaving our job to focus on that so it doesn’t take forever to do. To prepare for that we’re looking at everything we’re currently spending money on and determining where we can cut back.

As you may have noticed, the website / blog is one area where we’ve decided to cut back. The renewal for the website builder we were using came up and the price seemed a little high for a blog followed mainly by friends and family and I’m not exactly stellar at updating regularly, though I suspect that will change as we start doing more. With that said, we have done a few things over the last couple of months that I need to write posts about, so stay tuned for those.

Every transaction we do right now is scrutinized to determine if we should be giving it up now, it’s something that will have to go come spring, or if it’s something we really need and/or want. We are also getting a first hand education on how some companies conduct business when it comes to auto-renewals. Roll20.com was fantastic and understanding when I called right after seeing the charge on our credit card. We signed up at the beginning of Covid to continue our table-top game we were playing with the little one and another family. They gave me a refund for the subscription with zero issue, since we ended up not using it because we just couldn’t keep the children’s attention, and we have actually gone back and got the service again now that we have a plan to actually use it with adults.

Namecheep.com though was the exact opposite story. We had picked up a few domain names a while back and have since decided that we’re not going to use them. Forgot all about it until I saw the charge on the credit card. Again, I called right away and told them we don’t actually want to renew. Even though the renewal date wasn’t for another month after they charged my card, they would not give a refund. They said they charged a month earlier to ensure that there wasn’t a disruption in service and they had sent an email (that went to our Junk folder) so there was nothing they could do, even though I was calling a full two and half weeks before the renewal took effect. They also had a policy that allowed them to charge our credit card even though the one they had was expired. Needless to say, if we need a new domain name, we will not be getting one through them.
