The progress on the house right now is very visual and noticeable, which has been great, but we’re still racing against Mother Nature, and given the snow (yes snow) we had this week, she might be winning. Since the last blog, we’ve been putting up the first-floor walls. The first one we sheeted it firstContinue reading “Up Goes Some Walls!”

A Floor With a View
Progress is happening fairly fast now. First off, sorry this hasn’t been a weekly blog. Between some late nights and long days building the house and time spent trying to get my bookkeeping business going, I don’t always have the capacity to write this blog on a schedule. So until things calm down this isContinue reading “A Floor With a View”
A Little Help From Our Friends
We got a basement floor, with help, this week. The best concrete day to date, but I’m still not a fan of concrete day. But before concrete could go in, we had to prepare the floor for the concrete. This involved getting in 5 trucks of 2-inch crushed stone to go between the bedrock andContinue reading “A Little Help From Our Friends”
Continuing the Basement
We need to finish the basement (which was planned to be a crawlspace) before we can get to the first floor. Since we don’t want an uneven floor in the basement we have to plan to have two levels with a couple of steps between them. Hence the building of this small cinderblock wall. ThisContinue reading “Continuing the Basement”
Working Around The Outside
And we’re so happy to reach a point where there is an “Outside” and “Inside”. This week we worked at finishing everything we had to get done to start putting the dirt back around the outside of the house. First, we had to put peel-and-stick waterproofing around the walls, then cover that with dimple board.Continue reading “Working Around The Outside”
A Strong Foundation
We hope. Although better than the last concrete day, this one also didn’t go exactly as planned. We didn’t get done as much bracing on the wall as we hoped to do before the pump truck for the concrete showed up almost an hour early. Thankfully our help arrived before the actual concrete arrived, butContinue reading “A Strong Foundation”
A Lot Done This Week
This week was full. Not only did we get the concrete for the footings poured we got the ICF up and all we need is some more bracing and we get more concrete! As mentioned in the previous blog post, we had our inspection on Wednesday morning and the concrete arrived Wednesday afternoon. This wasContinue reading “A Lot Done This Week”
We Got The Permit!
So we’ve been busy getting the forms finalized before our inspection on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, in the morning. (That’s TOMORROW!) The main thing we did this week was to cut and install rebar to tie the bedrock, the footings, and the foundation into one monolithic structure. We created a handy jig for measuring theContinue reading “We Got The Permit!”
Forming Footings
This week we got the footings for the foundation formed and discovered that we had to say goodbye to another tree. With the hole dug for the foundation it became obvious that the large cedar tree in the yard would be in the way of our deck (not to mention our view of the lake)Continue reading “Forming Footings”
A Hole Lot of Trouble
We dug up the rest of the hole we need to do the foundation and got a couple of surprises. We had dug down to bedrock under the original east side of the house and we thought we had a large enough space to conclude that the bedrock was about there for the entire footprintContinue reading “A Hole Lot of Trouble”
