Framing Done!

OMG! A second blog post in the same month? What’s happening? Is business that slow? No, but we did get a lot done this month, and we’re ready for our framing inspection!

Last time I showed you the west side of the upstairs that is the little one’s bedroom and the main bath. Now we have the east side of the upstairs done, which is the two spare rooms. Since making the plans, we decided to add in another two piece bathroom between the two rooms, so the north (road) side room is now a little smaller than the south (lake) side room. We’re planning on putting the toilet against the outside wall and the vanity/sink on the hallway wall. We did this because it was a better layout for a tiny bathroom, and I didn’t like the idea of three doors in the small hallway.

As you may remember from the plans the rooms upstairs are going to have a normal ceiling in all the rooms upstairs and then the vaulted ceiling in the office, carried through from the great room below. Since the last blog we’ve framed in the ceiling creating two attic spaces, which will have an access door in each of the small hallways.

Also in the last three weeks our septic guy came to dig out and deliver our septic tank. We had planned to put it just to the side of the laundry room (northwest corner of the house) but the bedrock jumps back up again there, so we had to come up with another plan. (Some of you may recall that the reason we have a basement instead of a crawl space is becuse the bedrock dropped down by three feet right in the middle of our footprint.) So instead of putting it there we put it past the garage (which we still couldn’t get it as low as we wanted due to bedrock, but low enough that we can get it covered and landscape over & around it) and now we have a pump chamber where we originally wanted to put the septic tank.

We’re going to spend a little more on the heavier pump that will crush waste more so we don’t have to worry about it, since the septic system is already going to go above budget needing the pump chamber at all. It’s okay though, because we have saved a bunch of money finding items on auction and bidding on it. I think I mentioned the auction website prevoiusly as it’s where we got the boards for the deck, but this time around we got a whole lot more.

As you can see from the pictures, we got a lot this time around, and I didn’t even take pictures of everything. We filled a 20-foot U-Haul to bursting and still had to utilize the tiny Ford Fiesta for all the smaller kitchen cupboards. The picutre of the kitchen cupboards doesn’t really show how much we got. It’s enough to do the entire kitchen and the pantry minus the island. You’ll see it when we put it all in place. We also got all the interior doors, and all the doorknobs needed for those doors. We got a front door along with three options for door handle. (We will pick one and put the other two up for sale probably.) We got the tub and the vanity for the Master Bath, as well as a vanity for the new Jack & Jill Bath upstairs. Also picked up a exterior door for the basement, so the only door left to purchase is the exterior door for the laundry room.

As for the exterior, we have all the windows now installed except for the two needed in the basement, and we have most of the house with the exterior foam and strapping. We have decided to push off purchasing siding until next summer since this is acceptable for getting the occupancy permit, which we hope to have so we can move in before winter. It may be a little tight, but we will be starting electrical and plumbing soon and after that is done we can install drywall.

Well, that’s all for now. Thank you very much for following along on our journey and for your patience as these blogs have been sporadic. We’re happy to share this process with you.
