A Long Time Coming

Hello everyone! I know it’s been almost a month since my last blog and I’m sorry about that. Family got sick shortly after and then it was the holidays which came with only a lot of shoveling snow out of the house. But we’re all feeling better and the weather’s cooperated for the last week or so, which means I now have things to report.

The first thing we got done, other than shoveling a lot of snow, is the installation of the front porch posts. It was a pain to get them level as we backfilled with a lot of rock which we needed to stand on or around. (For anyone reading this blog, the fact that we have a lot of rock isn’t news.) We even got as far as measuring and marking where we need to cut them off for the roof that will go over the porch.

We also finished sheeting the middle section of the roof and removed the temporary floor we installed to do that work safely. With that gone we now have a sense of just how high the ceiling in our Great Room is going to be. We also get a sense of the southern view from the Great Room, as that wall is going to be mostly glass. Right now, the biggest problem with all that open space is lots of room for snow to get in.

There are still two-thirds of the house to get a roof over, which we made progress on this week. Once we got the TGIs out from the temporary floor we got to work putting them where they go. Four in each of the rooms upstairs, two on each side of each dormer window. They are a lot lighter than the LVLs, and as such a lot easier to install, (as in we could get them up without the use of the boat wench) but it still took two people, one on the floor and one up on the scaffolding.

Lastly, we got the ridge beam installed for the covered porch and the actual windows in the dormers cut out. That was done at the end of the day today, so unfortunately I don’t have any pictures of it at the moment. Hopefully, soon the house will be covered enough that it won’t take hours to get the pending snow out of it. That’s it for now. Hope all of you had a great holiday season, hope the new year is treating you well, and thank you for following along on our journey.
