I’m sorry. I know it’s been a while since my last post. I’ve been forgetting the blog when we come in for the night. Whether that’s been because I’ve been cold or we come in earlier so there’s time for more things inside, or maybe we’ve just given ourselves too much to do, I’m not sure, but I keep forgetting to sit down and write it. As it is I’m writing this as the little one learns how to play Pickleball.

Since my last post, we built the temporary floor above the Great Room and installed all the trusses in the middle section of the house (Over the Great Room and the Office) and got a good chunk of that area sheeted. Unfortunately, this seems to be the end of our good weather (even if it was still cold sometimes) as we’re expecting freezing rain followed by snow tomorrow and more snow over the weekend.

We also started on the roof of the other two-thirds by installing the 16 LVLs (2 laminated together on each side of all 4 dormer windows). Having the crane to do this would’ve been handy, but we purchased a boat wench that we put on top of the LVL beam and that allowed us to get the LVL into place with relative ease.

I’m glad we thought of this and were able to get a boat wench as I don’t know how we would’ve gotten it up 15 feet otherwise. Another thing that has become clear while installing these LVLs and sheeting on the roof is that you can not have too much scaffolding. Actually, the scaffolding has come in handy so many times throughout this project already, and we are planning on getting more.

Putting up the sheeting to form the roof has emphasized just how high our house is. Working on the edge is more than a little unnerving, and we’ve been questioning why someone who’s afraid of heights would design this particular roof. (We actually know the answer, and the answer is it’s going to look phenomenal when finished.) Regardless of how high up it is, it is also becoming clear that it is a complex roof that will have a lot of valleys in it, which you would think we noticed with the drawings, but the drawings and seeing the reality of it is not the same thing.

That’s all for now. Hopefully, we will soon have the house enclosed and then maybe we can take some time to breathe and not be cursing the sun for setting before five o’clock. Thank you for following along on our journey and hopefully you won’t have to wait quite so long for the next one.
