Starting the Roof

Weather and short days are affecting how much we can get done in a day. Recent snowfall had us spending the better part of the day simply shoveling snow out of the house. I’m sure long after the house is done I’ll be picturing it full of snow.

We did get done all the items necessary to be done in order to install the trusses and we had a crane on Thursday to install them as well as the large LVL beam that goes across the house. We did push it off a few days due to the wind, wanting to make it as easy as possible.

The beam went very well. We had the crane lift the pieces to the second floor where we measured and cut them, laminating them together. Then the crane lifted the two pieces into place where they fit together seamlessly. This was the biggest thing we needed the crane for as there was no way we were lifting that into place.

We were going to install the trusses as well with the crane, but this was less of a big deal as we had already installed two of them and they aren’t heavy, just big and awkward. However, once we had them up there it became clear just how far down it is from the top of the truss to the first floor of the great room below,

So we decided to build a temporary floor higher than the second floor to work on the trusses. It’s made from the TJIs that will eventually be part of the roof on the east and west side (these were too long to come pre-assembled as the trusses down the middle are) and wall sheeting. Since the floor is temporary anyway, we simply built it so the floor would be all we needed to work above the great room. We will have to utilize scaffolding for over the second-floor loft, but that floor is already in place.

It took us a day to build the temporary floor and it will take a day to tear it back apart, but worth it for the ease and safety it will provide.

We were going to put the trusses up today but again decided to delay due to the wind, so that’s on the agenda for tomorrow. The wind is now a big concern, especially if it’s coming from the South or South-West. But that is all for this week. Hopefully the next time I write one of these up we will have a full roof!

Thank you for following along on our journey!
