Apparently, I haven’t written one of these yet this month. That’s bad. We’ve made a lot of progress since the last blog continuing with things already started.

First, we got the subfloor installed on the second floor. Not a lot to say about this (other than, wow that view from the second floor!) but it’s nice being able to walk around up there. We finished the stairs we started before. Well, not finished, but we can walk up them now. The floorboards on the stairs are temporary as we’re going to replace them with the cutoffs from the second floor.

We built and got up the interior upstairs walls, including the longer boards needed for the trusses to sit on. The office loft and the great room will be open to the trusses as the three upstairs bedrooms and the bathroom will have eight-foot ceilings (as opposed to the nine-foot downstairs) with dormer windows in the part of the ceiling that comes down.

Most of the walls are now sheeted, and we’ve built the two tall side walls in the front that comes out a bit. (Cover photo). We’ve started the wall across the front, but since that has a 16-foot sliding door at the bottom and large windows higher up, this wall needs to be built in stages as there isn’t enough to grab onto to lift the entire wall.

And we’ve started the exterior wall on the east and west sides that have to be built with the slope of the roof. Trusses were delivered on Friday, and we have a crane coming on Tuesday to lift them into place and help us install them. We’ve had a lot of help in the last couple of months, and we’ve been so thankful for it as we’re still racing to get this enclosed before there’s significant snow.

One thing we have decided if we do this again is to not start unless we can start in May, maybe June. Not getting the permits until August has meant that we have been feeling rushed for the entire project. If there is a next time, we want to be in a position where if the start is delayed we can push it off an entire year. So learn from us, and don’t start building a house yourself in August unless it’s really small.
Thank you for following along with our journey and hopefully we’ll see you soon.
