We Got The Permit!

So we’ve been busy getting the forms finalized before our inspection on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, in the morning. (That’s TOMORROW!)

The main thing we did this week was to cut and install rebar to tie the bedrock, the footings, and the foundation into one monolithic structure. We created a handy jig for measuring the rebar length, so we didn’t have to use a tape measure with every single piece. We didn’t technically have the right tool for cutting rebar, but the reciprocating saw with a metal blade did the job.

We purchased a rotary hammer drill for drilling into the bedrock and it worked great. Then we manually hammered in the rebar with a sledgehammer. We knew the rebar was all the way in when the sledgehammer bounced off the rebar, which was a little uncomfortable to feel. After driving them in we tested to see if they could be removed and all passed.

We finally got the permit late Friday afternoon and called Monday to book the inspection. The weekend was spent making sure the forms were still level using the total station and installing the rebar. Monday we finished the rebar and started to fill in the bottom of the forms. We mostly finished that today with only a couple of pieces to do in the morning before the concrete arrives in the afternoon.

Looking forward, we have the inspection tomorrow morning and the concrete arriving tomorrow afternoon. So by the end of the day tomorrow our footings should be poured. The ICF guys are coming to help install the block on Friday and then we have to get the concrete back to fill those in. Then we will have a foundation and can get started on the first floor. We do have a bunch of posts to make in the crawl space as well, but we’re not 100% sure of the plan yet.

But hopefully, the next time I write to all you lovely people we will have some good progress to share. That’s all for this week. Stay tuned as we continue to build and thank you for following along on our journey.
