Forming Footings

This week we got the footings for the foundation formed and discovered that we had to say goodbye to another tree.

With the hole dug for the foundation it became obvious that the large cedar tree in the yard would be in the way of our deck (not to mention our view of the lake) and it would have to go. Out of the things we needed done, getting professionals to come and remove the tree was fairly painless.

And now we have a large pile of cedar woodchips to go alongside the building. That tree made a lot of chips, and we still have some logs as well, so the tree isn’t completely gone and will continue to be a part of the property. Works out well, as we will need the woodchips eventually anyway.

Aside from cutting down the tree, we got the forms for the footings built this week. The whole family was home and helped out. Our daughter got a lesson in measuring and leveling, but the skill saw is still a little heavy for her so Dad did all the cutting. She’s also spent the week rescuing the frogs that had made their home in the puddles we had to pump out of our hole, and giving them a home in the neighbour’s pond. There were quite a few of them in there.

And since we happen to own survey equipment, we used that to do the final level of the forms, getting each measurement to within 5 mm, and since we’re using the total station each measurement is independent of the previous measurements, so it doesn’t compound leading to a large difference at the end. As of right now we have forms for the entire outline of the house, now we just need to fill in the bottom of the forms so they go to the ground all the way around.

Unfortuantly, this is about as far as we can go until we get an inspection and permission to continue. We hope this will happen quickly as we’re anxious to get the footings done and to start building the foundation with the ICF block.

Anyway, that’s all for this week. Stay tuned as we continue to build and hopefully we will have something special for next week. Thank you for following along on our journey.

  1. Forming footings is a crucial step in any construction project, providing a solid foundation for the structure. In my experience as a contractor, I’ve learned the importance of precision and attention to detail when forming footing. By following proper techniques and using quality materials, I’ve ensured the stability and durability of the buildings I construct.
