Some Landscaping

Using the dirt we’re digging out for the foundation to landscape around the yard.

While we wait for the contractor that’s going to dig out the septic tanks and dig out as much as the foundation hole as he can in a day, we’ve been slowly digging the hole needed ourselves with the tractor. (Have I mentioned I love that tractor? I have? Just checking.) But digging that up leaves us with some dirt and rock to deal with. We’ve been putting it through a sifter to separate the dirt from the rocks, then utilizing the dirt in other places.

One thing we’ve done with the dirt is to make some extra parking spaces up the driveway close to the road. At least for now we’re going to park the trailer (the one used to haul things, not the one to sleep in) there as well as the small car. This should open up some space for contractors to get down the driveway. We also figure that more parking couldn’t hurt, as once the house is built we will have space for visitors!

But speaking of the trailer for sleeping in, we had to move it from where it was, as it was going to be in the way of building the new house. So we moved it up the driveway as well and parked it in front of the garage, and moved the porta-potty to be closer to the trailer. One side effect of this move is that we’ve stopped eating in there as it’s too far from the temporary kitchen. Now we eat in the shop or at the picnic table we put just outside the shop.

We also had to move the fort over a little as it was where our septic tank is supposed to go. At least we didn’t have to move it over far, but we did have to take the steps off so the little one is having to use a ladder to get up and down. Not a big deal though, since she’s been climbing ladders since she was 18 months old.

Not sure how well it’s coming through in the picture, but the hole is bigger than it was last week. Obviously, since the dirt to make the parking spaces had to come from somewhere. It’s much slower than it will be once the contractor gets here, but we don’t have much else to do until he arrives and our permits have been approved by the municipality. So getting a jump on landscaping it is. We do plan to raise up the yard between the house and the water and then slope it down towards the water, but we haven’t really done much of that yet. We have taken some of the dirt to smooth it out though, making the walk down to the water a lot nicer. We also removed enough foundation to smooth out that walk. The lake has actually been warm-ish the last few days!

That’s about it for now. Check out our Facebook page for more pictures and, as always, thanks for being here with us. See you next week!
