Take-Out Kitchen

We’ve built a temporary kitchen off of the shop/garage so we can make meals easier. We have been eating in the trailer but with moving the fridge and racks out to the new room, we’re likely going to put our dining room table into the space we’re staying in the shop.

Start of the new room

Since the room is temporary and not meant to be a permanent addition to the shop, we’ve been reusing the materials we’ve been pulling out of the house. The floor, walls, window, and door are all from the house and will eventually go once the new house is built. It took us about a week to tear the stuff out of the old house (including plumbing and electrical) and build this room, but worth it for our sanity.

Learning how to use the nail gun to put shingles on the roof

We did shingle the roof. Interesting call to the hardware store as we asked for the cheapest shingles they had, even if they had open packages with broken shingles inside. Since it was a small section of roof and we have all the proper roofing tools to do it (mainly the nail gun, which is a tool that’s easily paid for itself) I did it mostly myself as others moved over our water filtration system. Not completely alone though, as I took the opportunity to teach the little one how to properly use the nail gun. (Yes, we put power tools in the hands of our eight-year-old, and she loves using them.)

The new room

We’ve basically put our entire kitchen into that new area, making basically a galley-style kitchen. Against the full wall, we’ve moved over our countertop and kitchen sink, as well as the dishwasher and some lower cupboards. I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I am that I won’t have to wash all the dishes by hand after putting in a long day of manual labour. On the other wall (the closer one in the picture) we’ve installed the window that was previously in our kitchen and moved over the stove. The fridge we previously moved into the shop will be put there as well giving us everything we need to make a meal in one spot. This is much better than the week or so of transition where we had stuff still in the house, stuff in the shop, and stuff in the trailer.

Countertop, sink, dishwasher, and water filtration in the new area

As mentioned earlier, all the plumbing and electrical were pulled out of the house so we’re not using new things for an area that’s going to come down once the house is built. We’re also moving over two of the upper cupboards and putting one of the wire racks from the house in here. It will be small, but bigger and a better setup than what’s in the trailer. (Especially since the trailer doesn’t have a dishwasher.) It will make mealtimes easier, and less of a chore after a day of work.

Dog by the trailer door.

This week should see the remainder of the house down, then we can start on the excavating for the foundation. We had a small issue with the tractor backhoe this week, but hopefully, that part will be fixed soon as digging by hand (especially on our property filled with rocks) isn’t fun and takes forever. Then we can get the foundation in and actually begin the new house.

Thank you so much for following along on our journey and please follow us on Facebook. See you next week!
