We haven’t done a lot on our place over the summer, but here is what we did do.

Hello everyone. I am aware that I’ve been really quiet this summer and I apologize for that. A combination of me taking a job at the local grocery store during the height of tourist season and he working on a project not at our house to bring in some money left us with not a lot of time and it seemed little to say. However, now I have taken a job with a much better schedule (and more money) so I can get back to updating everyone on progress every week. The blog will likely move to Sunday from Friday though.

So what was he up to all summer? He was building a cabin and the homeowners have given us their permission to share with you all the work he did. This cabin is a building on their property that they rent out to people visiting the area. It is separate from the main house and is fully functional on its own, with its own bathroom and kitchenette. Guests can stay on property and enjoy the stunning view, or they can take the short drive into town to enjoy all the activities there.

The cabin itself already existed when they hired him to update it. They had moved the cabin over a bit, having poured a new concrete slab, and moving the existing bathroom. He rerouted the existing plumbing to the new spot, installed the toilet, sink, and shower as well as install the floor like he did in the rest of the cabin as well. He also installed all repurposed windows, and put exterior insulation for the floor, walls, and roof.

He built the cupboard for the kitchenette and the barn door that separates the bathroom. He installed the half-log cedar siding and the sliding door. He installed the steel roof and the fence around the patio. Yes, this is why it took him basically all summer to complete. Due to my schedule at the grocery store, I wasn’t really able to offer help so the only help he got was from the homeowners themselves. The project was bigger in scope than he thought it would be, but it was fun.

The nice part about doing this as an income source was that he got to spend the summer working outside. (A fact I was often jealous of on the really nice days.) He was able to take the puppy to the site with him so she wasn’t left alone all day and since he was a contractor, he had the flexibility in his schedule to pick up the little one from daycare daily. Sometimes he even brought her back to the site with him afterward if he had something he needed to complete.

In this area, there seems to be a huge market for this kind of work. He already has done some small stuff for other clients and has more jobs lined up, and we haven’t really advertised that he is doing this. It seems like his biggest challenge will be balancing this work with what needs to be done still on our place. The plan was not for him to be doing this full-time but for him to do enough to top up our budget so we can do all the things we still want to do at our house and it seems he could easily be very busy with this if he wanted to be.

Thank you to everyone that is still with us. The plan for our place has changed over the summer so stay tuned. I will be writing about that in the next couple of weeks. He and the little one has also been working on a project at our place. Tune in next week for details on that.
