Building an ice rink of sorts to move the garage over to the shop is what’s on the agenda right now.

As previously mentioned, in order to move the garage over to the shop we plan to flood the area between the two and push the garage over the ice. After it being too warm for a while we finally managed to start on that project. We got a new hose via curbside pickup, since Covid-19 restrictions were back in full force, and went about trying to make a smooth, icy surface.

At first, there was a small issue with using the hose. Either the spray was too strong and spraying the ground cut into it, or using the hose took a very long time to cover the area needed. We left the child to slowly walk around with the hose while we went and got more water.

As you may be aware, there is a giant source of water right out front of our house. The ice is thick enough to walk on for about 20 feet, then put a hole in the ice so we could fish out the water with buckets. This is heavy and quickly makes us sore, but we’ve managed to cover more area in a lot less time this way.

So far we’ve done two rounds of putting the water down and letting it freeze. Soon we’ll be heading back out for a third and we will do still some more tomorrow. The bucket method also allows us to have the dog outside and she’ll run with us between the lake and the rink but not get wet. When we have the hose out she tries to attack the water and would end up getting herself soaked, then cold, so we leave her in the house while using the hose.

Once we have the water on the ground, we go over it with the shovel to smooth it out. It was challenging to get a picture where the dog wasn’t attacking the shovel as she likes to do. We’ve also been having a fun time trying to keep the dog’s favourite activity of chasing rocks off the forming rink.

Update: In the time it’s taken me to write this it has decided to start blizzarding, so we are now uncertain if we will be making it back out today for a third round. It will depend on what the weather does, as is often the case with this project over the winter months. If it lightens up we’ll go back out, but otherwise, we might be done for today.

That is all for now. You can now leave comments and we encourage you to do so. You can also sign-up for a mailing list so you never miss a new post.
