Reusing items & making good use of deals

As you are aware, we finally got the new kitchen in the westernmost room of the house functional, but everything was sitting on the brand new sub-floor. We had some concern about the sub-floor getting damaged with the water & food that would inevitably be dropped in the course of regular use. We considered a few options for a cheep temporary floor to protect the sub-floor until we were ready to install the permanent floor in the kitchen.

We considered purchasing some cheap vinyl floor or painting it with sealant paint, before we realized that we were going to be tearing out the laminate floor in the east room soon anyway. Instead of spending money on a temporary solution we uninstalled the laminate in the east room with a little bit of care (not as much as you might think) and re-installed it in the west room. We were surprised that there was enough to almost cover the entire room.

On top of that savings, we scored a bunch of sheets of melamine for $5 CAD because they were being discontinued. We have used this to make some temporary furniture. We currently have the TV stand, a night side table, and the temporary cupboards I had mentioned in A Tale of Two Kitchens. This furniture has been incredibly functional while not costing us a bunch for something we know is meant to be temporary.

The last little bit of reusing we have done this week is in regards to mugs and other dishes we took from a cafe we owned down south. Originally we had sold all the kitchen equipment to another business, however they ended up closing and this week was spent down there to deal with that. Since we were repossessing the assets for sale, we decided to go through all the dishes and such and take what we and our friends & family could use. This means we now have enough dishes to have guests!

The weather has started to warm up a bit, and although we are expecting it to go back down before it stays at higher temperatures, we can tell spring is on its way. This will lead to a jump in things getting done as window installation, more landscaping, and the exterior cladding is waiting for warm weather.
