When doing a major project such as this one sometimes you need specialized equipment, and then you need to decide whether it’s better to purchase it or rent it.

In our case we needed a tamper to flatten the garage floor so the concrete guys can come and put in a slab. The biggest problem we were coming into with the idea of renting it is our location. If we were closer to the places that these things can be rented from, it would’ve made the most sense as we will need it a few times throughout the project for a few hours each time. However, since we live where we live it’s a two-day rental minimum as we need to travel for over an hour just to pick it up and drop it off, and that’s not accounting for the fact that we would need to do that around work and when the rental companies are open. So we did some research into getting a used one with the possibility of selling it at the end of the project (unless we decide to simply do this again) and decided that was the way to go. Then we managed to get a brand new one on sale, which was awesome. This is where my background in accounting comes in handy, because the answer to these questions isn’t always obvious, and sometimes for a lot of people renting the equipment needed is the much better option.

So we got the tamper and we got the stone in the garage floor packed down and smooth. Now we just need to wait for the concrete guy. He is busy right now, but since this is in a garage with a roof he could do this job on a rainy day, and our next-door neighbour also has a job that would be good for a rainy day so we suspect we’re not going to have to wait too long. Once the concrete slab is in we can move things out of the shop and into here, giving us back the use of the shop. We are looking forward to this as there are a few small projects that are waiting for this.

Also completed this weekend, we got the header installed and the wall opened up to completely connect the two buildings into one. It’s a relatively small thing that wasn’t difficult to do, but it feels like a big step. Maybe because it was what was needed to make the building feel like a single building instead of two buildings pushed together. Next weekend we hope to get the siding back up and then all that’s left is reinstalling the garage door. Then it’s back to cleanup (not that we’ve stopped) to get ready to go quickly on the house come next spring.

That is all for now. You can now leave comments and we encourage you to do so. You can also sign-up for a mailing list so you never miss a new post. That really helps us out. Thank you for following us on our journey and I look forward to seeing you next week. (Hopefully. My track record for weekly hasn’t been the greatest lately.)
