The Chimney Is Now Gone!!

Well, it’s torn apart. All the rocks and concrete that made the chimney are still there.

This week we tore down the last part that was standing from the east side of the house. We got the chimney down to the concrete base, which we think we need to rent a jackhammer to break up. The rest of the chimney was done with chisels, mini sledgehammers, a crowbar, and a lot of muscle grease, though we did do the last little bit with the tractor. (Have I mentioned before that I love the tractor?) Some of it came apart in large chunks and some in much smaller chunks. Below is a photo of one of the largest chunks.

Tearing apart the chimney made it obvious that it had received a lot of moisture over the years given that the wood was decaying and the concrete was crumbling. Also, as you can see in the first picture, the chimney structure is heavily rusted. We also found established colonies of insects and evidence of rodents nesting. So short version, more of the same of what we’ve found in the rest of the house prompting us to tear it down in the first place.

The weather, although raining a lot, has been nice for the most part, which has been great because going for a swim in the lake is a great way to end a hot and sweaty day of work. That’s it for now. It feels good to have the chimney dealt with. You can now leave comments and we encourage you to do so. You can also sign-up for a mailing list so you never miss a new post.
