Okay, I’m the one that forgot it, but there’s no need to be picky!

So before we could put in the foundation I talked about last week, we had to get concrete in for the footings. Due to us being sick there was a long time between building the frame for the footings and being able to get the concrete in. During that time we received a lot of rain, so the hole we had for the foundation was full of water.

We picked up a sunk pump at the local hardware store to take care of the water. Originally we had it running the entire length of our hose, but that wasn’t working well as the hose kept twisting on itself, so we ended up cutting the hose. We wanted to pick up a new one anyway so it wasn’t a great loss and it did speed up the process considerably. As of the writing of this blog though, we still haven’t replaced the hose, which meant all that mortar mixing we did last week was done with filling buckets with water.

The day the cement truck came we found ourselves scrambling a little. We had asked that they call when they were about 30 minutes out even though we knew they should be arriving around 9am. They didn’t call and they showed up just after 8:30. Thankfully it was easy to hear the truck from inside the house, but we weren’t really ready for them.

We had planned to fill a few of the deeper spots with rocks which we did some while waiting for the pour but not as much as we would have liked. It had also rained again the night before and although it wasn’t a lot we didn’t have time to drain it again. Still, we made due and it didn’t take long for the cement truck to empty into the frame. We came up a little short and had to get a rush delivery from the local hardware store and add five more bags, but it was still much easier than mixing and pouring all that concrete ourselves. I still have a hard time believing this was also the cheaper option.

We smoothed it out and then it was ready for the foundation wall I’ve already written about. (Hey, non-linear storytelling is fun!) Yesterday we spent the day mixing more concrete and filling the top two rows of the block. The rest of the weekend was spent catching up on everything we ignored last week to get the foundation done.
