Snowed In

Unable to go anywhere for two days.

This week we got to experience for the first time, literally not being able to go anywhere. The highway, which both streets from of house end on, was closed for two days due to the amount of snowfall we received and the winds blowing it around. We’ve never been trapped before, so this was an interesting and new experience for us.

Thankfully, our power did not go out all during this period and since we travel fairly far to do a once-a-week grocery trip, we had plenty of food. We also didn’t have any obligations to be anywhere this week, although I’m sure if we had everyone in the area is understanding about the only highway to get anywhere being closed.

Today, with the highway reopen, we had the fun time of digging out our car from under three days of snowfall, as well as a couple of things we had mistakenly left outside. We also had to dig a trench by the northern wall where the foundation is level with the ground, as it’s supposed to warm up again and we don’t need that melted snow in our crawlspaces.

We also shoveled the snow off of the shop’s roof. In theory, the roof should be able to handle snow load, but we know this garage was built without a permit from a previous car port, so we don’t trust it, and since we basically just finished getting the shop together, we didn’t want to chance the snow caving in the roof.

The biggest challenge has been the fact that our daughter’s school has been closed 4 days in the last 2 weeks (although 1 was a scheduled PA day) and the bus were cancelled another 4 days. That means if I hadn’t taken her to school anyway a couple of those days our daughter could have gone to school only 2 days in the last 2 weeks.

Keeping a 5-year-old entertained can sometimes be challenging on the best of days, let alone over a bunch of cold and snowy days, but one advantage to all the snow is that she has her own personal toboggan hill that she can ride anytime she wishes, which is currently sitting at an estimated 9 ft high.

But, still nothing compares to watching a storm coming in over the lake, while sitting by the fire with a nice hot cup of coffee. A winter storm may be even better than ones we had over the fall. We’ve been leaving the outside light on so we can see the snow and wind through our window instead of only our reflections. In short, still do not regret for a moment moving to this area!
