Preparing to Demolish – Part One

This week we started to move things around in preparation to tear down the first part of the house. This week we had the hydro moved and we moved our washer and dryer.

The major thing that gone done this week happened on Wednesday. We had contractors come in and move where the hydro came into the house. Originally it came in at the easternmost point of the house, which is the first part we intend to tear down. Obviously, it would be a bad idea to drive into the house with a tractor at the point where a live hydro wire attaches to it before even considering the lack of power to the part of the house we intend to live in for the next several months (over the winter, no less) while we build the new house.

This was originally planned to be done in March or April (which didn’t happen due to the global pandemic and the province shutting down) and getting it rebooked was a big headache in trying to get everyone’s schedules lined up with everyone being behind. We had hoped to be much farther along in this originally, and this blog started back up much sooner, but the delay had some benefits, giving us time to tweak the plan.

With the hydro turned off to half the house, we needed to start preparing the inside for demolition. This involved rewiring the bathroom so it has power as well as moving our washer and dryer into the bathroom. (Not ideal, I know, but our options are limited, and carting our laundry into town to use the laundromat is not one.) and walling up the hallway at the single stair. The short term plan is to expand the bathroom so it goes right from the door off the kitchen to the stair that soon will not be there.

Today (which is the reason this is being written so late in the day) we removed the wall and the bathroom door took the large table that was in the bathroom apart and moved the washer and dryer into it. This took a bit of extra plumbing work as we hadn’t planned to move the laundry room when we did that plumbing before and had it all connected to the bathroom plumbing. We have the water back on now, but the bathroom is out of power again for the short term as we still need to move the electrical for the dryer and the switch for the light.

Once the electrical is done we need to build a wall and then our house will be officially cut in half and half of it will be ready to be demolished. (Almost. We do still need to remove brand new windows that are being reused and clean out other items we wish to keep.) This project may have grown a lot in scope from when we started, but after a while of not moving on it, it feels great to be productive again. You can now leave comments and we encourage you to do so.
