This week consisted of working more on the footings for moving the garage and testing some of our assumptions regarding the cost of concrete.

This week consisted of making it so the fittings are level. Apparently, when I wrote last week they weren’t. We’ve also made it more sturdy and cleared some of the dirt from the pile in the middle to give us a ledge to work with. Work has been going a lot slower this year than when we first started as we are now limited to after work and weekends unlike when we first bought this place and neither of us worked. The other big thing we accomplished this week was arranging for concrete to be delivered.

Our original plan was to purchase bags of concrete and mix them ourselves in order to make these footings. This would require 120 bags of Quikrete 30kg Ready-to-Use Concrete Mix at about $5.00 per bag with the volume discount, giving us a total cost of about $600.00. That would be for just the concrete without any labor cost for the time it would take us to mix all that concrete and put it into place.
We had assumed this would be considerably cheaper than getting a cement truck in, but we decided to test this assumption and call a cement company. It turns out that our original assumption was wrong. Getting a conveyor cement truck in will cost us about $565.00. So getting the cement truck is more cost-effective before even taking into account that plan A would take two people about 15 to 16 hours to complete and plan B would only take 2 people about 2 hours and that plan B is much easier on our bodies.Needless to say, we have decided to go with plan B. The cement truck is scheduled to arrive on Wednesday, so there will be more on that next week.
