In the kitchen, there is a switch by the sink. The first time through the house we thought it was for a garburator. It’s not. That switch powers a pump which is needed to run to empty the sink of water.

Our options to fix this are fairly limited. If we wish to keep the kitchen at the east side of the building, the pump would need to stay. There is no practical way to bring up the east so the water can flow down to the septic tank. So we have decided that we are going to move the kitchen to the west side of the building, doing a major change to the large room over there.

Due to the water test coming back and telling us that our water is undrinkable, we already had a plan to take the small closet the water pump tank was in, and combining that with the closet next to the sliding doors to make a closet for a series of water filters. This closet would be located next to where we are now planning to put the kitchen. We are also planning to move the hot water tank into this closet. This has the benefit of putting all of this into one location, and moving the kitchen over to the west side of the house has the advantage of us only requiring plumbing in half of the house.

In this closet we have already installed a temporary iron filter to at least remove the iron from the water. So all the plumbing for the house will begin in this closet, making it way more convenient than it currently is with the pump and water heater located in two different spots. The filters will be installed at the end of September, and we can’t wait as it will mean the end of our bottled water dependence.

The AutoCADD drawing shows the plan for the filter closet as well as for the kitchen. We plan to take out the sliding door, putting a window in the one half. We will put the sink under that window. Then we will put a counter around the corner and down the west wall, removing the window that looks at the neighbor. We will then put in an island to separate the kitchen from the dining room area. All told, moving the kitchen is bound to be a lot of fun, so stay tuned!
