Moving The Garage

This week we saw a lot of progress as we got the walls of the garage moved to their new home. It also saw the weather get warm enough for the dog and the little one to venture into the lake. (Personally, I think they’re nuts.)

Last week was full of preparation. This week we took Thursday off work to take advantage of the warm weather, which is when the child and the dog took advantage of the lake after school. The lake is still too cold for swimming but it was apparently refreshing to stick one’s feet into. Actually, it was warm enough that Will dunked his shirt into the water before putting it back on he did consider swimming. I didn’t find it that warm out, but I tend to be colder than everyone else.

But onto the actual work done. Followers of this blog will be shocked to read that we used the tractor for the bulk of the heavy lifting for this project, but of course, we did. It still sucks a little that we had to move it in pieces because the ice rink idea didn’t work, (Well, not so much as didn’t work as simply the weather didn’t cooperate.) but it went a lot smoother than I predicted evidenced that all four walls were moved inside a single day and all we had to do on Saturday was connect the fourth wall to the other three.

The first wall was the easiest to move as it already had a great spot in which to lift it with the tractor. Not that the others were really all that difficult. With the two side walls, we had the tractor pick up one side of the wall with the assistance of tie-downs, while we lifted and steadied the other end. Then with the back wall we put a couple of holes into it for the forks to go through. Once finished the inside will cover them up with insulation and the outside will be covered with siding, so we won’t see them anyway.

Saturday was also nice so we finished attaching the fourth wall then spent most of the day doing more clean up around the yard. To reiterate, tearing down the house with the tractor was a lot of fun, but we will NOT be doing that for the remainder of the house. It simply created a much bigger mess than we anticipated as we’ve been cleaning it up since late fall. There is a lot to clean up. Unfortunately, as I write this it is raining outside and is expected to do so all day, so it doesn’t look like we’re going to much done today.

From here we need to put the trusses back up and the roof back on the garage. We plan to use the water and ice shield we have here to cover the roof to protect it, but we are not sure if we are going to reshingle it at this time. We sold most of the leftover shingles to a neighbour a while ago and we will just have to redo it when we do the house so they match. We will be reinstalling the siding as most of it came off nicely, but that will also be redone when we do the house so they match. We also need to cut a large hole in the one wall where it connects to the shop’s garage door to make the two buildings officially one.
