We continued working on the new foundation for the one-car garage we’re planning on moving.

This week we’ve managed to finish digging the hole for the new foundation. Using the tractor (of course) every evening after work until dinner time we dug approximately 2.5 to 3 feet down to hit bedrock. The box is 23 x 18 feet and about 4 feet wide. Digging was a bit of a challenge given the shop on one side and a tree line that we wish to keep on the other side. Digging the foundation for the house itself should be easier although more time consuming because it will be much bigger.

The plan is to place the one-car garage right up against the shop so the current man door of the shop still opens to outside, then next to it will be the man door for the one-car garage, then the garage door. The current garage door on the shop will eventually be removed as we cut a doorway into the one-car garage’s wall making the two buildings one.

The next step for this, now that the formwork for the footings are in place, is to get and mix the concrete needed for the footings. We will make a concrete wall all the way around about 4 inches high (the width of the boards used to build the formwork) on which will sit cinder blocks up to ground level. For this project, we plan to simply use the small concrete mixer we purchased a while ago although that will take a fair amount of time to mix all the bags of concrete we need. When we do the actual house we will pay to have a cement truck brought in.

Right now we are still waiting on the building permit to ensure that the building department does not have any issues with the plan. Once we have that, we will go ahead with the work above, then move the garage. For the short-term, the garage will have a gravel floor and we will have someone else do a concrete slab when we have the concrete slab for the main garage installed. It’s one of the few things we will pay a professional to do for us.
