Little Things Mean A Lot

We hit a few small, but very important milestones this week.

1) We now have drinkable water!

Yes, we can now use & drink the water coming out of our taps. The filtration system was installed into our plumbing closet on Monday of this week after we got the tile installed. We have a couple of bottles of water to still go through, but it is so great to finally be able to use our water without any worry and knowing that we are at an end of purchasing water.

2) We have hot water!

Although we had a small hiccup with getting the propane delivery (causing us to go with a different company), we managed to get the boiler hooked up to a small propane canister giving us hot water! This small amount of propane needs to last us one week, but it has already been glorious not having to boil water in a pot to do dishes, or warm up water to clean our child. We have also finally had our first shower in house, meaning the need to travel to the parents once a week just to shower is at an end. Now we can go simply to visit. Technically this could give us heat through the rads as well, but there isn’t nearly enough propane here for that.

3) We’re pretty much done fixing the problems in the west part.

There is now house wrap on the house, the foundation is level, joists have been replaced, floor has been reinstalled. Once we finish the outside work that must be done before snow falls, we can get back to the original job of moving our kitchen. We’ve already spray painted the layout! It was a headache and a half finding all the problems over there, but it feels great having it all fixed now.

4) We’ve started digging the trench for the water

With the electrical trench between the house and the shop done and now partially filled back in, we started the trench for the water line. This trench needs to go down three feet, instead of the two we needed for the electrical, but is not as long as the electrical. As mentioned in a previous post, this is to fix that our water pipe is currently just below the surface, thus requiring an active system to keep it from freezing.

Once this trench is dug we will run a new water line from the well to the house, and insulate with Rigid foam before burying it again. Luckily for us, the weather is still supposed to be warm (as in not freezing) so we should be able to complete the trench in this coming week. It will be interesting to see how many more large rocks we will pull out of the ground, and if we will have enough dirt to fill in the ditches without putting these large rocks back into the ground.

5) Had a great Halloween!

We were concerned about Halloween living where we are. Most of our neighbours have returned to their homes and even the ones that are here have long driveways. We thought there was a good chance we could be out for hours and have no candy to show for it. But here is one way small town living is great. Since pretty much everyone has this problem, Halloween is held at the community center, where not only was our child able to fill a bag in about half an hour, there was a show, a costume parade, and prizes for good costumes. We had a blast celebrating with all the locals. So a lot of little things happened this week that made us feel rejuvenated and gave us positive feelings about this project! With heat coming next week, winter is looking a lot less scary!
