I absolutely love having the lake in front of our house and being able to go swimming in it. When we first moved in we noticed that our neighbor also has a pool and we laughed at him. Why have a pool with the lake right there? Well, it turns out there may be some reasons to have a pool, though we still don’t currently have one in the plan.

The lake doesn’t require any maintenance
My favourite feature of the lake and the main reason I think it’s better than a pool is that we don’t have to spend any time maintaining it. Well, that’s probably not 100% fair to say given the trouble we’ve had putting in a dock and the fact that we were sweeping the rocks to make them less slippery, but it’s still way less maintenance than a pool. We never clean the lake or have to check the chemicals of the lake or anything else among those lines. It’s simply there.

The lake gives a great view
Another way the lake is better than a pool is the view it gives and the sound of waves. You just don’t get that with a pool. Pools are functional, but rarely pretty. No one is going to spend hours simply looking out over a pool, especially if there’s a lake as an option.
But you can control the temperature of a pool
The biggest reason to have a pool, even with the lake right there. Where we are located the swimming season in the lake is short (June to September if we’re lucky) and even in there the lake can vary wildly in temperature. Recently we went to go swimming on a warm day and the water in the lake was so cold it hurt. We couldn’t stand to be in it for more than a few minutes, which was disappointing as we really wanted to go swimming that day. Other days it’s not as cold as we expect so it does balance out a little, but the range of temperatures is massive and we don’t always know what to expect.
It’s never too windy to swim in a pool
This is another problem with having only the lake. Sometimes the wind is warm enough but just too strong. Strong wind causes big waves and occasionally those waves are too big and toss us around. You don’t get knocked over by the water in a pool.

Sorry for the fairly short post this week. We haven’t been working on much as we are still waiting for permits to be approved. Hopefully, soon we will begin moving the one-car garage over to the shop. You can now leave comments and we encourage you to do so. You can also sign-up for a mailing list so you never miss a new post. Please also follow us on Facebook for additional photos of the work being done. Thank you for following us on our journey and I look forward to seeing you next week.
