& yet more days off school.

The weather has still not been kind to us this week, as buses were cancelled 2 more days and the school closed an additional one. This means our daughter has actually gone to school a total of 4 days in the last 3 weeks. It is getting increasingly difficult to balance the work that needs to get done around the house, making sure she is getting in reading & math practice, and just generally keeping her entertained. On top of that, the highway was closed again today, limiting our ability to pick up things from the local hardware store.

Despite that however, we did have our final electrical inspection for the shop this week, which we passed. That means the shop is finished except for the building of a couple of workbenches. The shop has already been used to make a temporary counter top and cupboards for the new kitchen. We had our propane stove installed this week, and have used it, before we found a few issues with the electrical in the western room.

First for the good news. We had the rough-in inspection for the kitchen as well, and we have received approval to close in the north wall, which will be a big help in keeping the heat in the house. Unfortunately, even before the inspector arrived we found some more issues when we tried to finish up for the inspection. Never a dull moment with this house!

First, we found a wire leading to the upstairs had a wire staple clean through it, and not even though the ground wire, it was through the neutral wire. Following that wire we found a junction box in the ceiling! Well, that’s not accessible, and therefore not code, so we removed that. Now we have no upstairs hall light and half the outlets in the west room have no power until we can get all that rewired. Right after we moved our dining room table over there because it was still less drafty than the eastern room.

Lastly, the electrical sub-panel in the western room isn’t easy to get to and a pain to work on, since it is located right above our water pump. Thankfully, the inspector gave us a suggestion to build a half wall above the pump and put the panel on that, making it easily accessible when we open the door that will eventually be put on that closet. Also this week, we received our first deposit from Amazon.ca, so a big thank you for everyone who has followed our links to make your purchases. Be sure to follow us on Facebook to never miss a post and see additional pictures of the work we are doing or the property itself and, as always, thanks for reading! See you next week.
