Getting ready to move the single car garage and combine it with the workshop garage to expand the size of the workshop.

Yes, that is the next part of our plan. The reason we had to move the driveway is because we want to build part of the house where the one car garage currently sits. Instead of simply tearing down a perfectly good structure we’ve decided to move it and expand the shop so we can build more over the winter months. We had looked into ideas that would have the shop attached to the house, but it wasn’t feasible with everything else we wanted. Besides, this way the noise is out there.

We are digging this out using the tractor (of course. Have I mentioned how handy that thing is?) which is nice as it means only one of us is needed for most of the digging. Sometimes we have to hop down in there and clean it up with a shovel, and we need the shovel to get a few inches under the current shop as we don’t want to risk damaging it. We had almost forgotten what it’s like to dig by hand. Hard to believe our first year here we dug two trenches (one for a water line and one for a power line) completely by hand.

Even with that little amount dug out, compared to how much needs to be dug out, we already a few massive piles of dirt that both the dog and the child love to play on. Since these piles of dirt are likely going to still be here for the winter we imagine one of them will become the base of the child’s toboggan hill that we make every year when we clean the snow off the driveway. She is already excited about that. I am already not excited by the idea of my car being parked outside all winter, but the snow melting off the car was already no great for how the single car garage was built.

The other thing we are doing with all that dirt is preparing to demolish the Eastern side of the house. Shown above is the start of a ramp we will use to drive the tractor into the house in order to destroy it. Some more prep work needs to happen before we can do that like getting a permit and making sure absolutely nothing we wish to keep is in that room. I am hoping we will be able to video the process of knocking down the wall and hopefully I’ll be able to upload it to this blog. Either way, when that happens I will be documenting it so stay tuned.
