Converting the western garage into a proper wood shop.

Over the last two weeks, we have been mainly focused on the shop, trying to get it completed so we can use it to build things for inside the house. Coming soon, some of the things we build here will be available for purchase through our website! Stay tuned for some high quality, hand-built products that would be great in any home!

OSB has now been installed on all the outer walls with Roxul insulation and vapor barrier behind it. We put some of the green rigid foam insulation from the crawlspace on the garage door, in pieces so the door can still open when needed. Spray foam insulation has been installed on the ceiling (unfortunately, not shown in the picture) & we have already seen an improvement in regards to melting snow and ice on the shop roof.

Before we finished insulating the shop, we had our propane provider come by and move the tank we got when we purchased the house over to the garage and hook it up to the heater that was previously moved. This gave us an insight into how much difference the spray foam in the ceiling makes, as the propane usage after is already way down.

The electrical wiring of the shop was completed this week. After talking to the electrical inspector we decided to build an electrical track to run the wires along the wall instead of behind it. Now we are just waiting for the electrical inspector to come by and give us his approval, as well as the approval for the wiring in the kitchen, which is why we haven’t had him come by yet. We are trying to figure out exactly how we are going to put in the wiring for the under counter wiring. (Stay tuned)

One of the tools we needed to purchase for the shop arrived this week. A little early for Christmas, but he won’t let me wrap it up and put it under the tree thus making him wait to use it. What can you do? This attachment to our chainsaw will allow us to use those trees we cut down to make things around the house. This particular tool was purchased through Amazon (available here) and as soon as we have a chance to use it we will provide a full product review.

But not all of the progress made over the last two weeks has been in the shop. We have also started installing drywall in the house, in the front hall and in the bathroom. Both areas have the first coat of drywall mud completed and will be sanded early in the coming week. Perhaps soon we will be able to install the window in the bathroom, giving us some natural light in there again.

We have some plans for the front entryway that will make it look a little different from how it started. As you can tell by the picture to the left, we are shrinking the window that was originally there. This is so we can install a proper front hall closet along the wall shown. Also, we think this space looks much better with the drywall instead of the wood paneling.

That is all for this post.
