A Place For Our Stuff

Trying to figure out exactly where to put everything has been a challenge, but we’ve also found some things we were wondering where it had gotten to.

As we continue to prepare to demolish the eastern part of our house we’ve had the fun task of going through all our possessions and trying to determine which we should throw out, which we should sell or give away, which we should keep in storage, and which should be easily accessible. One might think that anything we haven’t already moved over wouldn’t need to be easily accessible and thus should automatically go into one of the other three categories, but we found a few things we had actually been missing (like several of my sweaters) and some things we want to keep but it makes little sense to simply put them into storage.

We’ve had to get a little creative with shelving unit locations and which items should belong where. Since the closet hardware in one of the bedrooms that’s about to go was in good shape and the one bedroom upstairs doesn’t have a rod or shelf at all we took the hardware out of the one closet to put into the other closet, which wasn’t planned until I was cleaning out that room. We have also put the two single beds in the child’s room together and put a queen mattress on top of them because it was the best place to store the mattress for the next year.

And that’s not all we are looking to reuse as we prepare the building to come down. A neighbor of ours mentioned that they were looking at putting siding up on one of their garages but didn’t want to spend a lot of money to do it. Since we are not planning on using the siding that was on the house we told them to simply take as much as they needed. Win-win as they now don’t have to pay for siding and we don’t have to pay to get rid of it.

And as mentioned in a previous blog we have learned from our mistake and we took out the windows in the easternmost room. Unfortunately, this was not as smooth as we would have liked. The first window came out with minimal issues and effort, but the second window cracked and instead of risking it shattering while in our hands we simply broke it, so again we have glass everywhere, although this time it was more controlled and is mostly contained to inside the room with the other pieces that we need to get rid of. Some fell out outside, but we got those cleaned up.

That’s about the extent of what’s happened this week. A bunch of moving things around and further preparation to demolish. Work is slowing down again with the nights starting fairly early and both of us working during the week. We had a fair amount of rain as well which has nicely filled the hole where we need the concrete to go in order to move the garage. We still hope that we will be able to get that done soon.
