The building of a hall closet.

In the last blog post, I mentioned that the little one and her dad made some Christmas presents in the shop but couldn’t go into detail as that was before Christmas. The birdhouse in the picture was made for Grandma & Grandpa, with the little one gluing it together, sanding it, and helping to paint it. It was well received by the Grandparents and they plan to put it up in the spring. I can’t wait to see what else she & dad will create.

But onto what we’ve done to the house. When we tore apart the front hall area to remove the vermiculite (see the blog post about that here) we tore out the wall hooks which were being used to hang our jackets, so since then we have been been keeping our jackets in the bedroom (storage room) just off the hall.

We decided to put in the closet now for several reasons. The main one was that we were hoping to install the front hall window and thought that it would be better to have the closet completed first. The second reason being that it was a fairly quick project to do and it would add some functionality to our daily lives.

First thing we had to decide was how big we wanted this new hall closet to be. We measured out a few options and decided to go with a bigger (36 inches) one. I felt this looked the best, giving us about the same amount of space on either side of the window. I also thought that a closet that could hold more stuff would be better, I guess forgetting we don’t have a lot of stuff.

We also put up drywall throughout the hallway, including the ceiling and managed to get the first coat of mud onto the walls. It turns out our little one is pretty good at applying mud if a little slow at doing it. It’s pretty great watching her learn these skills as we fix up this house.
